Jewelry for a Cause: September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

It is September 1st and this month is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. I was asked by She Finds (as well as other indie designers) to design an accessory that would support the non-profit group, Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF).

As a clinical scientist in a previous life, I was appalled that there is NO early detection method for ovarian cancer. A pap smear will only detect cervical cancer NOT ovarian cancer. As a result, this is the #1 gynecological cancer killer, 5th cancer killer in women and 1 in 67 women will be affected.

I designed the Love & Hope Necklace with the medium art glass. I have 3 layers of glass that have been baked to 1500 degrees. The teal color is the official color of the OCRF. The hammered sterling ring is the "O" for ovarian and the white pearl represents love/hope. 25% of the proceeds from this design have been pledged to the OCRF. I will sell the design for $49.95 through the end of 12-31-2007.

Art glass was my first choice because in it's natural state it is quite fragile but when it is annealed it has strength. This reminded me of how fragile life is but how we endure our trials with strength.

Ironically, at the end of August one of my inner circle's mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Within days, she further learned that it is stage 3 and has metastasized to her lymph nodes and major organs (kidney & liver). She just had a biopsy and is scheduled to start chemo on the 13th of September. Please keep this and other family's facing this disease in your thoughts and prayers.

You can see what other indie designers were inspired to create for this important women's health issue starting Sept 4th on She Finds. All of these designs will help support the OCRF to continue their important mission-educating, raising awareness and researching ovarian cancer.

I urge you to go to the OCRF site and get the facts. Tell your family, friends and co-workers that they also need to educate themselves.
