From my personal experience, I can attest to the fact that a tripod , understanding WB and using the macro feature on my digital camera have made a tremendous difference.

I also keep a photo journal that documents the different settings I've used to achieve a certain look . Photographing glass, silver and gold all requires different settings which I've only learned through trial and error! :)
