Turquoise is an opaque to semi-translucent stone found in colors from sky blue to green. It frequently exhibits veins or more properly called Matrix. The color in Turquoise is caused by the copper and iron content. Turquoise was one of the first gemstones to be mined. The stone is found in Mexico, USA, Tibet, Chile, Australia, Chile and England among other places. The best turquoise is found in Iran.
Did you Know?
Since it is porous, it is frequently dyed, and sometimes waxed for appearance. Sometimes it is sliced and glued to form a doublet and appear larger in a setting. The matrix is sometimes enhanced and the stone is sometimes permeated with epoxy. Now days, untreated turquoise is rare and if you are paying a premium price be sure it is actually Turquoise rather than a dyed stone or glass imitation.
How to Care for your Turquoise:
Turquoise can fade and discolor over the years if not kept clean. Do not soak it as it absorbs and don't clean it with chemicals or a sonic jewelry cleaner. An Ionic cleaner can be used on Turquoise. It is soft and should be kept separate from other jewelry and wrapped for its own protection.
